Eating Out at Chick-fil-A

Killing chickens; killing rights; killing equality
all for $6.50, plus tax of course.

It all started by a COO speaking on a radio programme a few weeks ago. He expressed his views on gay marriage, in which he stated that he supports "the traditional family," so no dog-cat, mouse-owl, or even Mac-Windows families. After backlash of many people, including the mayors of a few major cities, failed presidential candidate, and current-Fox News commentator Mike Huckabee said that August 1st would be Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, in which people who supported the COO's statements go in and purchase a meal. I underestimated the appeal of such an event, but living in the Bible Belt, I guess I thought to highly of those who live in my state.

When lunch came around August 1st, people began to pack Chick-fil-A's around the country. For a few hundred feet, cars and people lined up to order their waffle fries and chicken sandwiches and whatever other chicken-based products they sell. Although not releasing numbers, Chick-fil-A said they had record sales that day, with money from people who feel that marriage between two people of the same sex is immoral, disgusting, and whatever other adjective that describes dislike.

In my hometown of Dallas, I watched the noon news as a helicopter hovered over a Chick-fil-A in north Dallas. I was a bit disgusted as I saw the line of cars and people standing in the 100F degree heat bearing it all for some forgone notion of moral righteousness that they plan on introducing to the whole of the nation. Seeing all those people and cars, I was saddened but not deflated. There are many those who believe that everyone deserves equality in all sectors in life-- even marriage. And maybe one day, we'll look back at such actions and regard them with disgust and embarrassment as we do now about racial segregation and discrimination.

One day.
One day.
