Krokodil is named so because of the thick scaly patches that occur throughout on the addict's skin. The drug also damages internal organs and tissue, including nerve endings. Without nerve endings, people end up developing gangrene on their arms and legs with no pain indication that their flesh is dying.
It was reported in late September that the drug, a cheap alternative to heroin, had reached Arizona, Arkansas, and even Alabama. The DEA has stated that these stories are "anecdotal".
